About Fohr

The second-largest of Germany’s North Sea islands, Föhr has long been popular with couples, friends and families eager to unwind at the seaside. Home to around 8,500 people, living in the town of Wky and surrounding villages, Föhr has a laid-back, low-key atmosphere, perfect for relaxed, outdoorsy travellers. Charming and intimate, the best places to stay in Föhr reflect the island itself: a brilliant Schleswig-Holstein destination.

Föhr is an island rich in tradition, and it’s well worth taking the time to stroll through its historic villages on foot, or to attend one of the many annual festivals. The Dr. Carl Haeberlin-Friesenmuseum offers an insight into the island’s whaling history, as well as its cultural roots, whilst the Museum Kunst der Westküste boasts a wonderful collection of pieces by German and Scandinavian artists. Step further back in time at the medieval Protestant churches of St Johannes, St Laurentii and St Nicolai, for beautifully decorated interiors and cemeteries full of tombstones memorialising the lives of whales and sailors.

Nature lovers will adore the opportunity to explore the mudflats of the Wadden Sea National Park, with bird watching tours and boat trips aplenty. Cyclists and equestrians can criss-cross the island on well-marked paths, whilst sailors, wind surfers and kite surfers will find classes and equipment hire in Wky, Nieblum and Otersum. Play a round of golf or a game of tennis before returning to our pick of the best places to stay in Föhr for sundowners and superb regional cuisine.
