About Sylt
The most popular of Germany’s North Sea islands, Sylt is a land of glorious sandy beaches, windswept dunes and sparkling seas. Brilliant for those dreaming of a coastal escape, the island is easily reached by train or ferry from the mainland. Although part of Schleswig-Holstein, Sylt has its own distinct dialect and Frisian traditions, making it a fascinating cultural destination as well. There are a tremendous range of accommodation options, too, with the best places to stay in Sylt including everything from simple B&Bs to gorgeous seafront hotels.
Life in Sylt undoubtedly centres on the island’s golden coastline. Spend your days swimming and sunbathing, or building sand castles and gobbling ice cream as a family. The west coast is studded with surf schools, whilst keen wind surfers, sailors and kite surfers will also find ample opportunity to hone their skills out on the water. The annual Windsurf World Cup is held at Westerland Beach, and brilliant for spectating.
Head inland for meandering hiking and cycling trails, or to visit striking heritage landmarks. St. Severin Church, which dates back to the 13th century, is very special, as is the chance to step back in time at thatched Altfriesisches Haus. Come afternoon or evening, pick a perch at a friendly café, or retire to one of the best places to stay in Sylt for sundowners and sensational seafood. This really is a wonderful holiday spot for the whole family.
