About Andros
The northernmost and second-largest of the Cyclades, Andros remains relatively unknown in comparison to the far more famous Santorini and Mykonos. Boasting more fresh water sources, it’s far greener than most of the other islands in the group, with forests, fields of wildflowers, and groves of olives and citrus trees. Just a short ferry ride from Athens, the island is brilliant for a weekend getaway, with most of the best places to stay in Andros clustered close to the ferry port at Gavrio, or in Andros Town.
Delve into Andros’ history with a wander through its wealthy port towns: Gavrio is the mooring point of choice for sailors, whilst Andros Town has some striking neoclassical mansions, many of which originally belonged to traders and shipbuilders. The Museum of Contemporary Art’s collection includes works by Picasso, Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec and Miro, whilst the Andros Archaeological Museum has pieces dating back from the Mycenaean era to the Roman period.
It is walkers, however, who are the main visitors to Andros. The island is criss-crossed with cobbled footpaths leading up hillsides and down into valleys with waterfalls, flower-filled meadows and some impressive archaeological sites. The ruins of a Venetian fortress are an excellent picnic spot on a hiking or horse riding day and not to be missed. Adventurers will be fascinated by the Foros Cave — one of the earliest to be discovered in Greece — as well as by diving, sailing and snorkelling opportunities. Return to one of the best places to stay in Andros to unwind after days of outdoorsy exploring.
