Begin your explorations in Corfu Town, the island’s bustling capital. Set on the east coast, this historic community is home to much of Corfu’s most sensational architecture. Stroll along the Spianada — the town’s esplanade — to admire impressive buildings between the Old Fortress and the heart of the Old Town. The Old Royal Palace, now the Museum of Asian Art, will delight culture aficionados — as will the Liston, built by Napoleon to resemble the Rue de Rivoli. Corfu Town also has a lively evening scene, with parties spilling from bars and tavernas into the street.

For a more tranquil experience, look to Corfu’s lovely villages. High in the mountains, heritage-listed Old Perithia was built as a hideaway from pirate attacks, Kynopiastes is home to one of Corfu’s most famous restaurants, and Lakones is close to the beach where Odysseus reputedly first met Nausicaa. The east coast waters are the calmest for swimming, but you can expect glittering azure waters on all side of the island. For Corfu Old Town

Siorra Vittoria is a gorgeous neo-classical building right by City Hall Square and the Ionian Parliament. Originally a mansion, the hotel still has high ceilings with wooden beams, parquet flooring and a pretty garden. A lovely old town B&B.
Locandiera is a charming little hotel in an old Venetian building with a burnt orange exterior. Interiors are chic and more contemporary, with blue-grey and more burnt orange tones, as well as artisanal decor. Shared spaces — like the breakfast room and lounge — have a more cosy, classic feel. A gem on the edge of the old town.
Bella Venezia, close to the 'Spianada' and within easy walking distance of historic Corfu Town's attractions, is one for heritage buffs. A traditional townhouse, the hotel has old-fashioned communal spaces, including a bar with velvet-upholstered armchairs and chandeliers. Very comfortable.
Corfu Palace sits on the waterfront, just ten minutes from the centre of town. One of the first hotels to have been built on the island, this much larger property has something of the feel of the grand dame about it. Choose from a mix of traditional and more modern rooms with private terraces, and enjoy the spa, pool and restaurant.

For Families

Fundana Villas is a family-run rural escape, with self-catering villas surrounded by big landscaped gardens with a pool. Four-poster beds are topped with floral quilts, and flagstone floors stay cool even during the summer months. A family favourite, with a wonderfully laid-back feel.
Bella Mare Hotel sits at one end of a pebbly beach with crystal-clear waters, and is an ideal escape from the bustle of the real world. Families will adore the flexible accommodation options, the evening karaoke and the swimming pool. Comfortable and welcoming.

Mon Repos Palace is a modern design hotel on Corfu's dazzling coast. Villa de Loulia is a romantic, pink-painted manor house tucked in the countryside of northern Corfu. Elegant, traditional charm pervades throughout, with beamed wooden ceilings, prettily draped beds in pastel-painted bedrooms and classic tiled bathrooms. Fly to Corfu International Airport from a number of UK and European cities. Alternatively, catch a flight via Athens International Airport. You can also arrive by ferry or cruise ship. Hop in a taxi or speak to your hotel in advance to arrange an airport or ferry pick up.

Expect warm summers, with temperatures hovering around 26-30°C between June and August, which is also peak season. For fewer crowds travel in May or late September, when you can find great hotel deals — but do be aware that October tends to be rainy.
