About Arugam Bay

Set on Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast, Arugam Bay remains one of the island’s more remote surf destinations. A sleepy little beach town with a well-deserved reputation for sensational waves, however, it’s well worth the long, hot journey. Boasting golden sands, world-class surf breaks, rejuvenating yoga and a burgeoning array of trendy eateries, it’s a brilliant escape for adventurers of all ages. The best places to stay in Arugam Bay are intimate and laid-back, perfect for unwinding after big days out on the water.

Most travellers are drawn to Arugam Bay by the surf. Hire boards, take lessons in the village’s crescent-shaped bay, or head out to top-notch breaks like Lighthouse, Whisky Point and Peanut Farm. The east coast’s wild, unspoilt beaches are ideal for long strolls or sipping refreshing post-surf coconuts, whilst seaside cafés, bars and eateries promise fresh, seasonal cuisine and an appealing community atmosphere.

Explore the nearby fishing villages, visit tranquil temples, or take day trips to Kumana National Park, where you can spot elephants, leopards and endemic birds with an expert guide. The best places in Arugam Bay reflect the simple, low-key charm of the area, and the warm welcome of the community who call it home.

Travel information

  • Arugam Bay is six and a half hours’ drive from Bandaranaike International Airport. Most hotels will be happy to arrange an airport pickup with a reliable driver who knows the roads well, whether you’re travelling from the airport, the hills or the southern beaches.
  • There are buses to Arugam Bay from hotspots across the island, but this is a hot, slow and often unreliable way to travel. Unfortunately Sri Lanka’s railway network does not reach Arugam Bay!
  • Temperatures in Sri Lanka hit their peak in April and May, when it can be very hot for exploring. Do book well in advance if travelling during the east coast's high season — from May to September — as hotels fill up fast!
