Famed as the home of the Pennsylvania Dutch, this part of the state is populated by communities of Amish, Mennonite and German Baptists (Brethren), amongst other religious orders, who believe in low-tech, simple living. Head to the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society to delve into the region’s heritage, or to the open-air Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, which has recreated an 18th-century village. For a real sense of rural Pennsylvania life, take a ride in a horse-drawn buggy with an Amish, Mennonite or Brethren follower as an expert guide. The undulating hills and lush pastures are dotted with livestock, windmills and sometimes more horses and buggies than cars.
Lancaster’s downtown area, on the other hand, boasts a hip creative scene. Venture to Demuth Museum to admire the work of Charles Demuth, tour the 20+ galleries of Gallery Row, or pop into the lively performing arts venues of Princes Street. The Fulton Theatre hosts an excellent programmes of events, whilst nearby North Queen Street is known for its retro and antique shops. Time your trip for ‘First Friday’ if you can: this monthly celebration features open galleries and street entertainment, with a brilliant vibe. Although this region is generally more slow-paced, the 30+ rides at Dutch Wonderland Amusement Park are ideal for a day out with the kids!
Finally, check out Lancaster Central Market — the longest continuously operating farmers’ market in the USA — for terrific produce.
