Gatekeeper to the mighty Mississippi, New Orleans is a byword for French elegance, Southern charm, jazz parties and terrific cuisine. A melting pot of European, African and Creole influences, it’s a fascinating destination for romantic couples, families or groups of friends — but it also has a gritty, storm-battered side. Travel to the city to experience its architectural delights, its tough, dark past, and its defiant, independent spirit. There’s a huge choice of accommodation options in this mini-metropolis, with everything from Creole cottages to swish city hotels fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets. Many of the best places to stay in New Orleans are clustered around the fabled French Quarter, but a number of our favourites are hidden in quieter, leafy neighbourhoods — check out our neighbourhood guide to where to stay in New Orleans for more ideas.
Some of our New Orleans Collections:
Begin your explorations at Jackson Square, in the French Quarter. Dominated by the 18th-century St Louis Cathedral, the square is a lively gathering place — and the cathedral packs out for ceremonies on major holidays. The Cabildo Museum, in the building where Louisiana’s colonial government once sat, is also intriguing. The Quarter brims with colourful, French-era homes, often with intricate balconies overlooking the streets below. Royal Street, packed with galleries and antique shops, is a brilliant spot for a walking tour. The Historic New Orleans Collection, on the same street, is excellent.
For an amble through refreshing green spaces, look to Riverwalk or City Park, which includes beautiful botanical gardens. Just nearby is the Sydney & Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, outside the New Orleans Museum of Art. Culture in New Orleans in everywhere, but other highlights include the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Lafayette Cemetery No 1, and the National WWII Museum. For live jazz, look to the Tremé / Lafitte or Faubourg Marigny neighbourhoods — though you can expect music all across the city. The Garden District will delight nature lovers and history buffs alike.
Feast on New Orleans’ legendary gumbo, dance the night away in soul and jazz clubs, or get to grips with the city’s turbulent history and proud traditions over the course of your trip.
