For the Album

Swinton Park

  • Swinton Park is a castle of a stately home, set in 250 acres of parkland, and offering all the perks of stately home life. Think elaborate decor and sumptuous surrounds, but also lots of living space, fancy afternoon teas, croquet on the lawns, pony rides, fishing, falconry, wine tastings, walks, a cinema, and an impressive spa, with indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, thermal suite, gym and a long treatment menu. Dogs are welcome in several rooms and cottages and will be provided with a comfy bed, delicous chew and food and water bowls.

For The Views

  • The Charles Bathurst Inn is a charmingly converted 18th century inn with spectacular views of the Yorkshire Dales. Perfect for walkers and cyclists, there’s hearty pub food served in the cosy pub, and 19 light, airy traditional style rooms to relax in. Dogs are allowed in some of the rooms for a charge of £20 per night.

For a Country House Hotel

Devonshire Arms Hotel

  • The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa is the first of two properties on our list set on the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey estate. Once a coaching inn, it’s now more of a country spa hotel with a 3 AA Rosette fine dining restaurant, plus a brasserie, a huge indoor pool, and stunning grounds. The 40 rooms and suites are as luxurious and romantic as you need them to be. And well behaved dogs are welcome here, at a charge of £10 per night.

For a Rural Retreat

  • The Traddock is a beautiful, Yorkshire stone Georgian country house, in a stunning spot on the edge of the Dales. Inside are 12 traditionally decorated rooms and suites — all with wonderful views — and an award-winning restaurant. Outside there’s a picturesque garden. You can tell The Traddock is family run by the care they take with all their choices. Dogs are welcome in the rooms and in the smaller bar — so they can even be with you at meal times.
  • Stow House is a large country vicarage, with windows that look out over glorious Wensleydale. During its conversion into a seven room guesthouse, new wooden floors and a contemporary colour palette were added to the light-filled rooms, and some of the attic rooms were opened out. It’s all clever and understated, designed to draw your eye to the windows. This is an owner managed affair and it’s clearly their pleasure to welcome you, and your dog — to all but two of the rooms.

For a City Break

Middlethorpe Hall

  • York’s Middlethorpe Hall & Spa is a fine example of a country house hotel, only it’s not really in the country, it’s just ten minutes from the centre of town. Middlethorpe still has 20 acres of grounds, a beautiful salon where they serve a luxurious afternoon tea, a stylish restaurant, a number of charming sitting and lounging rooms (so there’s always a quiet corner), and a pool and gym. Dogs are welcome in the Cottage Suite or Garden Suite, but they can’t come into the main hall.

For National Park Access

Ox Pasture Hall

  • Ox Pasture Hall is a peaceful country house hotel surrounded by pleasant English country gardens, not very far from the coast around Scarborough or from the North York Moors. The decor is simple, pleasant and comfortable in the 32 rooms and suites, and in the welcoming lounge and restaurant. Aside from the gardens and views, the food is the Hall’s other great offer. This is a very easy choice for dog owners, because they have dog-friendly rooms across their price spectrum, and the fee is only £10 extra per night.
  • The Lister Arms is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, right beside the Pennine Way; a creeper-clad, nine room former coaching inn with a buzzy bar and a reputation for fantastic home cooking. The kitchen team will make a delicious picnic up for you, in addition to providing fantastic meals — and making their own dog biscuits. The rooms are unfussy and packed with genuine creature comforts. Dogs are welcome here for a fee of £15 per night (10% of which goes to the Search and Rescue Dog Association).

For Walkers and their Dogs

Beck Hall

  • Beck Hall is a charming property in the Yorkshire Dales — set against a wonderfully rugged backdrop. All of the 18 rooms and suites are dog friendly, and are traditionally decorated, with a rustic feel, hardwood furnishings and exposed beams. The restaurant will surprise you with its style and imagination, and the local produce menu is impressive. Dogs stay for free.
  • The nine room Angel Inn was built in the 15th century as a drovers’ inn, but became a popular pub in the Dales during the 1950s. Oak beams and stone flags and walls are everywhere to remind you of how historic this place, and this area is; but today you can also expect all the creature comforts. Including a wine cave, and an excellent modern British menu which has been awarded one Michelin star. One suite and one studio room are dog friendly and dogs are welcome in the bar; dogs beds and bowls are provided.

For Families

Devonshire Fell

  • Devonshire Fell is a cheerfully converted Victorian hotel, wonderfully positioned on the Duke of Devonshire’s Yorkshire estate, offering picturesque views over the postcard perfect village of Burnsall. Guests are a stroll from pleasant tea rooms and pretty villages, and the ruined priory of Bolton Abbey; the market town of Grassington is only ten minutes drive. The interiors are contemporary and colourful, and the art is all original, and from the Chatsworth collection. Dogs and families always welcome.
  • The Raithwaite Estate sprawls between the forest and the coastline of Whitby, offering accommodation in rooms, suites and self catering cottages on the expansive grounds. There’s plenty to do here, but it’s also an opportunity to get a bit of a pampering — there’s a lovely spa — and a choice of restaurants: the French Brasserie, and the Poacher’s Bar. A good selection of the rooms are pet friendly, with a charge of £15 per night.

For Romantics and their Dogs

  • The Pheasant started out as a smithy in Harome, three miles east of Helmsley, on the southern tip of the North York Moors, but it’s been carefully converted into a 12 room hotel, with an award-wining restaurant and an indoor pool. Built around a gravelled courtyard, the rooms are all arranged with lots of light, and tastefully decorated with Shaker-style furnishings. Two of the suites are dog friendly.

For Yorkshire Pubs

The Talbot

  • The Talbot, Malton is a large and handsome Georginan-era coaching inn, known most for its great food — and that’s in Malton, Yorkshire’s self-named foodie capital! Expect robust dishes highlighting local produce, in generous portions — but you will want to leave room for pudding. The decor has been reimagined recently, and keeps things traditional, but reflects current trends for lots of pot plants, mismatched antiques and vintage pieces, and Farrow & Ball colour palettes. There are 26 rooms, those at the rear of the building have views to the River Derwent. Most of the rooms are dog friendly (there's a small £10 charge per stay) and Malton is renowned for its dog-friendly credentials.
  • The King's Head is a traditional coaching inn in the heart of Richmond. Inside it feels more contemporary than traditional, though — the decor has flair, both in the 24 rooms and suites, and in the pub and restaurant on the ground floor. It’s all well lit, with velvet chairs, fresh wood and black and white photography. This is a great hub for the Dales. Dogs are welcome, with a charge of £10 per night.
  • The White Swan Inn, in the pretty market town of Pickering, is a popular pick for those exploring the North York Moors. Its known for its Yorkshire welcome, local ales and produce, and traditional, coaching inn style — which involves tiny snugs and a warren of narrow hallways and staircases leading to the bedrooms in the original part of the inn. For something larger, and more contemporary, book one of the rooms in the converted outbuildings behind the pub courtyard. Dogs are welcome in these.

For Great Value

Bike and Boot

  • Bike & Boot is a fun-feeling contemporary hotel overlooking Scarborough’s South Bay. Expect colour, style and contemporary art work, but all without losing a cosy, friendly feel. They have a place for your surfboard, your muddy boots, and your dog, and they’re all about helping you find the local outdoor adventure to suit you. Great for families too.
  • The Blue Lion is a charming, traditional inn on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Inside are 15 cosy rooms decorated with a quintessential British country style that complements the antiques and beamed ceilings. The bar and restaurant offer hearty food, roaring fires and good ales. Dogs are welcome in the majority of room types, but do check first.

For Luxury

  • If nothing has sounded luxurious enough for you yet, then consider the Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa, an old York stone inn in the pretty town of Helmsley. The 33 rooms and suites are all individually designed and decorated, and can be as luxurious as you need them to be, plus there’s a heated outdoor pool, an elegant spa, and a well regarded restaurant. Pets stay for free, and there’s plenty of space if you’re here with your whole family.
