Major refurbishment by a top LA design firm has restored this once-decaying building to its former glory. With floor-to-ceiling paned windows and a whitewashed exterior, the hotel stands as a beautiful example of tropical urban architecture. On the inside custom-made Mexican and French furnishings, geometrically tiled floors and bold colours against a monochrome background ensures the Trade Hotel oozes sophistication. The grandest building on Plaza Herrera, the American Trade is most convenient for walking the lively streets of the Old Quarter, and there is certainly no shortage of trendy spots to choose from. Rooms are pared-down and seriously stylish. They range from the smaller “Cuarto Chico” with a neat shower-only bathroom, to large suites with a sitting room area, desk and telly. Generous bathrooms are equipped with dual-headed showers, clawfoot bathtubs, and Aesop toiletries. Beds are large and exceedingly comfy and the amenities are modern - iPod docks, internet radios and flat screen TVs. A tiny plunge pool offers the perfect respite from unrelenting humidity. The well-stocked library is also a cool haven. There’s live music every weekend in the hotel’s own jazz club, a trendy coffee shop that attracts local hipsters. A farm-to-table restaurant (one of the best in town) and bar cover half of the lobby area - undoubtedly THE place to be seen. Receptionists and doormen are efficient, armed with maps and top knowledge of the area.

Why do people love staying in your hotel? We are aware that the story of Casco Viejo and Panama are still in the process of being written. It is a place in transition, where every guest is a part of history because their interactions and experiences, and the stories they bring home with them, will influence what happens next. By staying at American Trade, our guests choose to be a part of, and make a difference in the country’s culture while at the same time, getting a glance into the past through the design and architecture of both ATH and Casco Antiguo. What is there to do in the area? Casco Antiguo is the heart of the historic district in Panama and is very well known for its night life. Casco Antiguo has many bars, restaurants and nightclubs, perfect to fit the most demanding visitor. What kind of breakfast do you offer? We have a complete breakfast menu with options ranging from a Parfait to Eggs Benedict. Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? We have a restaurant that offers all meals, a bar that has a "lighter" menu, perfect for drinks and the Jazz Club that offers both snacks and complete meals. Recommend plenty of spots in Casco Antiguo. Which are your most popular room types, and why? Panorama. We only have 3 of these, but our guest love to enjoy the 180º casco view. What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms ? Yes, extra beds can fit certain rooms.
Aside from the decor, there’s lots to love, beginning with the rates, which are inexplicably lower than those of the high-rises across the bay.
