Roermond is something of a hidden gem in The Netherlands; the sleepy city sits between Düsseldorf and the Brussels border and boasts many beautifully preserved buildings in its historic, 13th-century town centre, now designated as a conservation area. It is also home to the smallest castle in the country, Kasteeltje Hattem, which hosts a stylish, understated hotel and gourmet French restaurant. At just eight suites, this hotel has a boutique feel; there is a pleasing blend of old and new in the interior design, with antiques peppered among contemporary furniture and artwork, and many heritage features preserved. Book a luxury suite for generous extra living space and pretty views over the property's gardens. Down in the restaurant, there is a cosy atmosphere, with two carriage lanterns illuminating the dining room from the high ceilings. The menu changes every two months and has a seasonal focus, highlighting fresh, locally sourced ingredients; the light Mediterranean touch is an unexpected delight.
