Hotel review

This delightful 17th Century former shooting lodge overlooks an inlet on Skye's south coast within easy reach of the Kyle of Lochalsh and the Skye Bridge. However, located as it is down a long track on the Sleat peninsula, Kinloch feels a world away, with no houses or roads in sight, and just the stars and the rustling of the trees by the water's edge for company at night.

The ancestral home of Lord and Lady Macdonald (owner Claire is the well-known cook and food writer), this enchanting hotel is housed in two buildings - the main house and a waterside South Lodge across the lawn. Both retain the spirit of a family home, with antique furniture, portraits, photographs and collected knick-knacks scattered about the public rooms. The most comfortable of these is an old fashioned sitting room with a roaring log fire in winter and views across the lawn to the sea. There's also a cosy little bar just inside the front door, with a wide range of whiskies to choose from. There's no reception as such, adding to the delight of the place and the sense that you've just come to stay with the family for a few days.

The dining room is a highlight, serving some of the best food on the island, with short, daily changing menus using fresh local ingredients. All too often these affairs can be hushed and formal, but the atmosphere and friendliness of the place, reinforced with a smattering of very loyal visitors from all over the world who come year after year, gives everyone the sense that they are lucky to be here, an impression reinforced by Lady Claire's daughter Isabella, who now runs the hotel, doing the rounds to say hello.

There's a small private dining room that can cater for small parties, and the lodge can be booked for groups. The rooms themselves are elegantly furnished with well chosen fabrics, comfortable beds, discreet lighting and modern luxury bathrooms. Many have gorgeous views across the garden out to sea. There are some good walks around, a small and deserted beach at the end of the lawn, and all the glories of Skye and its unrivalled landscapes within easy reach. Though returning to tea and cakes or a wee dram after a blowy day out should be a highlight of anyone's stay at this lovely hotel.
