About Stanley

Set on Tasmania's northwest coast, the pretty seaside town of Stanley is a charming destination for heritage aficionados and outdoorsy travellers. On a slender peninsula stretching towards the Bass Strait, this little colonial-era community is home to well-preserved historic buildings, as well as gorgeous natural landscapes. There are some lovely accommodation options in the area, but our Gurus’ pick of the best places to stay in Stanley is a gorgeous yellow-painted inn — a local landmark for almost two hundred years.

Most views of Stanley are framed by the craggy volcanic rock — known affectionately as ‘The Nut’ — which rises from the sea beyond the town. Follow the walking trail or zip up in the chairlift for dazzling panoramic views from the hill’s 150-metre-high peak. Keen hikers and mountain bikers will adore exploring the nearby Tarkine Wilderness, Rocky Cape National Park and the Savage River National Park. Guided tours are even better, yielding fascinating insights into Tasmania’s rich wildlife. Penguin viewing at Godfreys Beach is popular, as are seal cruises and whale-spotting excursions. We’d also recommend laid-back beach days, as well as sailing and fishing trips; there’s some delicious seafood to be found in the Bass Strait.

Back in town, stroll through Stanley’s historic streets to admire cosy stone cottages, then delve into local history at the Stanley Discovery Museum and Genealogy Centre, Joe Lyons Cottage and the Highfield House Historic Site. Evening ghost tours are fascinating and great fun, too. Round off your days with convivial seafood suppers in town, and cosy nights by the fire at our choice of the best places to stay in Stanley.
