About La Thuile

La Thuile is the Aosta Valley’s quieter resort, more for skiers than après skiers. It started out as a mining town, but its pretty centre, and the growing popularity of this region for skiers, attracted large hotels to La Thuile. Today these are still on the outskirts of town, close to the lift base, with more traditional chalets and lodges closer to the historic centre. Our recommendations for the best places to stay in La Thuile include B&Bs and guesthouses, as well as traditional chalets, and a couple of stylish options — for serious skiers who are also looking for indulgent surroundings.

La Thuile is one of the Aosta Valley’s more snow-sure resorts, its slopes reach 2700 metres, so there’s plenty of high terrain, and its stunning scenery and wooded slopes get snow coming in from all directions to keep things nice and white (it also has around 40 snow cannons as back up). It also has great links to the rest of the valley, a ski lift to the runs of French resort, La Rosière, and a free bus service to nearby Courmayeur — ideal if you’re looking for a more lively night out, or just some new pistes. Not that La Thuile is bereft of après ski, its charming centre has plenty of choice when it comes to eating and drinking, and a couple of shops.

La Thuile is also a paradise for cyclists, and walkers, there are great marked routes, and boasts a friendly municipal swimming pool. The scenery is spectacular throughout with the year, with incredible views of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Mont Blanc, and some of the best places to stay around La Thuile have incredible panoramas that will take your breath away!

The rule usually holds that the higher up resorts are the most snow sure, and La Thuile sits between 1441 and 2700 metres. But check with the hotel you’re planning to stay in for information about early and late skiing. If you’re visiting La Thuile to hike, or mountain bike, most people plan for the late spring and early summer, to avoid too much snow, while maximising the fresh, alpine beauty.
