About La Thuile

La Thuile is the Aosta Valley’s quieter resort, more for skiers than après skiers. It started out as a mining town, but its pretty centre, and the growing popularity of this region for skiers, attracted large hotels to La Thuile. Today these are still on the outskirts of town, close to the lift base, with more traditional chalets and lodges closer to the historic centre. Our recommendations for the best places to stay in La Thuile include B&Bs and guesthouses, as well as traditional chalets, and a couple of stylish options — for serious skiers who are also looking for indulgent surroundings.

La Thuile is one of the Aosta Valley’s more snow-sure resorts, its slopes reach 2700 metres, so there’s plenty of high terrain, and its stunning scenery and wooded slopes get snow coming in from all directions to keep things nice and white (it also has around 40 snow cannons as back up). It also has great links to the rest of the valley, a ski lift to the runs of French resort, La Rosière, and a free bus service to nearby Courmayeur — ideal if you’re looking for a more lively night out, or just some new pistes. Not that La Thuile is bereft of après ski, its charming centre has plenty of choice when it comes to eating and drinking, and a couple of shops.

La Thuile is also a paradise for cyclists, and walkers, there are great marked routes, and boasts a friendly municipal swimming pool. The scenery is spectacular throughout with the year, with incredible views of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Mont Blanc, and some of the best places to stay around La Thuile have incredible panoramas that will take your breath away!

The Best Places to stay in La Thuile

For Skiers

  • Nira Montana is a luxurious, 55 room chalet hotel, just 400 metres from the ski-lifts. It takes its decorative cues from the alpine scenery (each room has a private balcony or terrace), and the result is serene, elegant and extremely comfortable. The spa is equally elegant and serene, and has an indoor pool, the restaurant specialises in local produce and cuisine — with the addition of a pizza oven from Florence — and there’s even a kids club to complement the family suites and kids’ menu.

For Groups and Families

  • Rifugio Lilla is a small ski chalet with great access to the slopes. There are just eight rooms (including an apartment which can sleep four), all laid out differently, but all traditional, cosy and colourful, and a breakfast room with an impressive vaulted ceilings. Laid back, and friendly.

For Great Value

  • Locanda Collomb is a traditional alpine chalet, complete with stone and wood clad exterior, and triangular roofs. It has just eight rooms and suites, also with wonderfully traditional detailing like wooden floors and rustic furniture. The location, just ten minutes from the slopes, is ideal for skiers, and the chalet offers a cheerful welcome on return, in either the fire-warned lounge, or the sauna. They also set you up with a proper breakfast.

  • If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • If you’re coming to ski, the ski season runs between late November and mid April. The rule usually holds that the higher up resorts are the most snow sure, and La Thuile sits between 1441 and 2700 metres. But check with the hotel you’re planning to stay in for information about early and late skiing. If you’re visiting La Thuile to hike, or mountain bike, most people plan for the late spring and early summer, to avoid too much snow, while maximising the fresh, alpine beauty.
