The first modern capital of Greece, Nafplio is a romantic little port town with beautifully preserved heritage residences overlooking a buzzy harbour. Unsurprisingly one of the most popular destinations in the Peloponnese, the town boasts a lovely selection of guesthouses and hotels, many of which are housed in striking historic buildings. Our list of the best places to stay in Nafplio highlights owner-run gems, superb seaside hotels and a restful rural escape.
Perched beneath the vast Palamidi Fortress, Nafplio has changed hands repeatedly since it was founded during the Bronze Age. You’ll spot the influence of the Venetians, Franks and Ottomans in the town’s architecture as well as rich culture. The spectacular Palamidi Fortress is perhaps the town’s most famous Venetian landmark, but the Bronze Age Akronafplia Fortress and the Venetian Bourzi, set on an islet just west of the port, are also very impressive. Delve further into the town’s history at the fascinating Archaeological Museum, the War Museum, or the Folklore Museum. The town’s branch of the National Gallery hosts a varied collection, whilst people watching with an aromatic coffee on bustling Syntagma Square is a real treat.
Nafplio’s old town, which covers most of the small peninsula, is lovely for laid-back strolls. Pop into galleries and cafes, or sip Greek wines in trendy bars and tavernas. Wander down to the harbour to spot fishing boasts and pleasure yachts, and to mingle with the Athenians who spend their weekends savouring delicious fresh seafood in the town’s top restaurants. Venture along the coast to discover pretty fishing villages, for sea swims, sailing trips and fishing excursions, or head inland to follow scenic walking and cycling trails. Tours and tastings at nearby vineyards come highly recommended, as do tours of the ancient town of Argos. With so much to see and to in the area, the best places to stay in Nafplio are understandably popular. Book well in advance if you plan to travel during the peak summer season!
