Perched beneath the vast Palamidi Fortress, Nafplio has changed hands repeatedly since it was founded during the Bronze Age. You’ll spot the influence of the Venetians, Franks and Ottomans in the town’s architecture as well as rich culture. The spectacular Palamidi Fortress is perhaps the town’s most famous Venetian landmark, but the Bronze Age Akronafplia Fortress and the Venetian Bourzi, set on an islet just west of the port, are also very impressive.
