Hotel Review
The archetypal country-house - creeper-covered walls, early-Victorian styling, rolling lawns - this place feels more like a home than hotel. Originally a grand, private house, it became a hotel in the 1960s; owner managed and guests are welcomed like friends. Rooms are generously furnished with sofas, lamps, richly patterned wallpapers and heavy curtains. The style is definitely traditional - some might call it old-fashioned - but with a welcoming personal touch rather than anything overly designed. Bedrooms are all about comfort; generous in size (even the standard rooms have space for sofas) with a mix of antique and reproduction furnishings, thick curtains and plenty of thoughtful touches such as books, hair spray and pretty jars of sweets. Dinner is a formal affair - drinks in the lounge before a five-course meal in a room glistening with silver cruets and cut glass. Afterwards, it’s a joy to curl up in a sofa by the fire with delicious petits fours and a digestif. Service throughout is attentive, kindly and relaxed.

Large lounges with open fires give everyone the space they need to enjoy staying at Farlam.
What is there to do in the area? Hadrian’s Wall is obviously a big attraction and the nearest part is only about 4.5 miles away. There is plenty of walking, historic houses and gardens to visit, fishing, golf, shooting – both grouse and pheasant - and even Carlisle Airport for pleasure flights or lessons.
What kind of breakfast do you offer? We offer a fully serviced English breakfast where you do not have to help yourself to anything.
Do you offer other meals? We serve dinner every evening. We are out in the Country so the only other places to eat locally tend to be Pubs.
