“Timbrell's Yard is located on the banks of the river Avon. Set in a Grade II listed building, and with recently refurbished, smart boutique rooms with plenty of muted tones and wooden features. Enjoy hearty food in the restaurant! Ideal for couples or a pitstop for families heading west”

Hotel review

Overlooking the river Avon, this modernised C17th inn first started life as a dyer’s home belonging to Thomas Timbrell, when the market town was a centre for up to 30 wool mills. Over the years, the building has, among other things, housed a political group, rowing club, picture theatre, makeshift library and now has 17 comfortable, contemporary rooms with a popular bistro-style restaurant. Guests can choose between spacious loft and mezzanine suites, cosy oak-beamed doubles and dual-aspect bedrooms with cushioned window seats and a roll-top bath at the end of a French-style bed. Muted shades, natural fabrics, vintage furniture and pendant lighting create a calming atmosphere. The menu, compiled by Tom Blake offers an eclectic mix of seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes with a hint of Mediterranean flavours accompanied by succulent wines. For breakfast there’s the usual croissant and egg options, alongside mushrooms on toast or porridge with homemade plum jam. If you’re lucky to be there on Friday morning, you’ll find a popup bakery from the sister hotel At The Chapel in Bruton, selling loaves and pastries. Staff are super-friendly and helpful and considering you’re in a town, peace prevails other than the occasional gentle clang of a church bell.

Timbrell’s Yard, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire

"It bills itself as bar/restaurant/rooms rather than hotel, and the reception is reached through a long, convivial bar area, where local ladies are having coffee and pastries and young families lunch and drinks. The 14 bedrooms, in a maze of stairs and corridors panelled in mellow unfinished wood, seem to be saying, “Hey, look at all this period stuff” – there are low beams, deep window seats, wonky floors aplenty – “and see how up to date and witty we’ve made it.”
