For a further insight into Nevis’ past, head to New River Estate or see the ruins of Cottle Church and Montpelier House, where Horatio Nelson married Fanny Nisbet. The Horatio Nelson Museum is also intriguing.

Adventurers will delight in hiking up Nevis Peak for expansive vistas, or in following walking and cycling trails past the old ruins and abandoned roads which criss cross the interior. You’ll also see Nevis’ famous hummingbirds flitting amidst the bougainvillea and hibiscus. • Want to fly to Nevis?

• Fly to Nevis' Vance W. Amory International Airport, and hop aboard a bus or taxi to your destination. Alternatively, travel to St Kitts' Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport and take a short ferry across to Nevis. Most hotels will be happy to coordinate a pick up for you in advance.

• Travel between November and mid-April for balmy temperatures averaging at around 28°C. The hurricane season — June to November — is best avoided. The Christmas and New Year season is especially busy, so book your trip well in advance. Travel in late April or May for great hotel deals.
