About Sag Harbor

The most northern of the Hamptons’ charming seaside towns, Sag Harbor sits just across from idyllic Shelter Island. Popular with families and couples eager to unwind by the seaside, the area offers a wide range of accommodation options, including simple B&Bs, characterful townhouses and fun, harbour-side spots. The best places to stay in Sag Harbor are intimate and quirky, providing the perfect base from which to enjoy Long Island.

The first official port in the USA, Sag Harbor was originally a whaling town, and its simple, narrow streets belie its historic importance. The town has top literary credentials, too: named in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, it was also once the home of the writer John Steinbeck, and now offers cultural attractions aplenty. History buffs will be fascinated by the Whaling Museum, the Whaler’s Church and Umbrella House — the oldest house in town — where British troops stayed during the American Revolution. There are several fascinating cemeteries to explore, too, as well as the impressive Jermain Library.

Adventurers and nature lovers, on the other hand, will adore the wetlands and dunes surrounding Sag Harbor. Much of the area is protected as part of the Elizabeth A Morton National Wildlife Refuge, home to intriguing endangered species. The nearby woodlands, too, are home to deer, muskrat, red foxes, coyotes and woodchucks.

Back in town, stroll along the harbour, pop into cafés and vintage shops, and head to one of the town’s yacht clubs for the chance to get out on the water. Whether you’re into sailing, kayaking, fishing or spotting dolphins and harbour porpoises, there’s stacks for the whole family to try!

From water sports to historic buildings, Sag Harbor offers plenty for outdoorsy travellers and culture aficionados to experience. Many of the best places to stay in Sag Harbor are converted mansions, port-side cottages or former industrial buildings — one of our favourites is gorgeous restored townhouse. The top hotels fill up fast during the summer months, so book your stay well in advance!
