Suffolk is the kind of England international visitors often want to see. Green, charming with a bit of a roll to it and some seriously beautiful historic towns and villages full of warmth and character. Think vast churches and perfect green, bordered by a combination of half-timbered houses and thatched cottages. Cosy and bucolic, with a pleasant climate, Suffolk also offers the breeze of the ocean for a little bit of excitement. Suffolk is also a pretty quiet county, which helps with the unspoiled feeling. And makes it ripe for experiencing with a bit of local advice. Which you’ll find is always on offer if you stay at one of the best pubs with rooms in Suffolk!

Our Gurus and our guests have been coming to the conclusion that the old fashioned way of travelling around the country, enjoying the hospitality of its wonderful old pubs and coaching inns, is one of the best ways to see the Home Counties. In Suffolk's best examples you’ll find the food, drink and comfort travellers have always needed, plus the friendly welcome and, in some of our Guru’s recommendations for the best pubs with rooms in Suffolk, a lot more. Some regions do pubs with rooms, or old coaching inns, better than others, and Suffolk had some great old highways, so is certainly a good place to find some of the finest pubs with rooms in the UK.

SuffolkKaren Roe via Flickr

You’ll find many of the best pubs with rooms in Suffolk dotted along the old highways passing through the picture-postcard villages, like medieval Lavenham and Constable’s Dedham, and a few in the busier centres, like historic Bury St. Edmunds and horse-y capital Newmarket. But you’ll find them on smaller roads and in more rural spots.

15 of The Best Pubs with Rooms in Suffolk

The Most Romantic Pubs in Suffolk

The Swan at Lavenham

  • The Swan at Lavenham is a famous old coaching inn dating from around 1400 - so expect black and white Tudor beams and plenty of original details and walls and floors which are definitely not straight! There are 43 ancient, low beamed rooms, and it’s a popular spot for people looking for an historic experience. Not your classic pub with rooms, but coaching inns certainly qualify!
  • The Westleton Crown has won several culinary awards, so it's safe to say it provides more than just gastropub fare, expect the cuisine to be a bit fancier. You can assume the same about the rooms of this converted 12th century coaching inn - and there are 35, which is a lot more than most pubs with rooms, with extra rooms in the outbuildings and old stables. There’s Egyptian linen and duck down duvets and pillows and bathrooms by Fired Earth. It’s romantic, but also family friendly.

Long Melford Swan

  • The Long Melford Swan is a luxurious inn set in one of Suffolk's most picturesque villages. A fantastic restaurant serves up contemporary pub fare and the bar churns out excellent cocktails alongside a well selected choice of ales. The seven rooms are all individually styled and immaculately finished.

The Best Pubs with Rooms in Suffolk for Walkers

The Sun Inn

  • The Sun Inn is a charming old coaching inn in Constable’s village of Dedham, a typically idyllic English country village. The inn is just across the road from the church where he painted. It has seven rooms, some with four poster beds and all of them with nice views. Peaceful and quite romantic.
  • Just two miles from Sutton Hoo, The Crown at Woodbridge is a chic gastropub in a charming Suffolk village. As well as having great food - especially seafood - the pub is known for its Suffolk ales. There are ten simple, yet rather luxurious, rooms in cool, modern shades of pale grey.

The Bildeston Crown

  • The Bildeston Crown is a traditional country inn set in the quaint and quiet village of Bildeston, but with 12 recently refurbished rooms it feels quite contemporary inside. The chef offers modern british food in either a formal or relaxed dining area.

The Best Restaurants with Rooms in Suffolk

The Crown and Castle

  • Sutherland House is an excellent family-run seafood restaurant in an historic building in the centre of Southwold. It has four comfortable, spacious rooms and some really nice original features - some dating back to the 1450s!
  • The Crown and Castle is a charming restaurant with rooms on the Suffolk coast, with wonderful river and castle views. Ideal for exploring the area – from Aldeburgh to Orford Ness – or just switching off from everyday stresses.
  • Once a pub, The Mistley Thorn in Mistley on the Stour Estuary, is a popular restaurant with seven simple, yet comfortable rooms, which are great value - especially if you include eating in the restaurant, which you’ll want to.
  • The Crown, Stoke by Nayland is a popular restaurant with 11 boutique rooms - some with French doors opening out onto a terrace - and great views across the countryside. This is a great spot for walkers, close to quaint Lavernham and the picturesque Dedham Vale.

The Best Pubs with Rooms in Suffolk for Families

The Black Lion Hotel

  • The Black Lion Hotel is a charming hotel, overlooking the village green of Long Melford. It's classic English interiors with antiques, bold florals and roaring fireplaces and the award winning restaurant, which serves up locally sourced seasonal produce, make this a great place to stay for anyone not just families, but it is very welcoming for families.

The Best Value Pubs with Rooms in Suffolk

Angel Inn

  • The Angel Inn is a 16th-century inn in the heart of Constable country, with original oak beams and features - albeit with all the mod. cons..
