“In a quiet corner of Fort Kochi lies this 18th Century property. Decor is chic & spacious on the inside, yet true to its roots with period artwork, antique pieces & an overriding nautical theme. Rooms enjoy private balconies & cavernous baths. East Indies Restaurant serves tasty South Asian cuisine.”

Hotel review

Harking back to its roots, Eighth Bastion takes its name from the seven bastions of the Dutch East India Trading Company's fort layout. Located within the main Fort Cochin area, just 200m from the photogenic Chinese fishing nets, this 18th century property has been propelled into the 21st century. And the Dutch influence continues further than the name: there are are plenty of interior design references to Cochin's nautical past including a miniature VOC ship and plenty of old maritime maps. Outside there is a courtyard garden with inviting lap pool: an idyllic respite on those hot Keralan afternoons. Rooms are decorated using organic materials and earthy tones and feature private balconies. The bathrooms are a real treat with wooden flooring reminiscent of a ship deck and huge stone tubs. Industrial style, wire frosted glass window frames add a modern edge and are complimented with traditional Indian chick blinds. In typical CGH Earth bravado Eighth Bastion celebrates its heritage, whilst embracing modern styles. A delicious breakfast spread of local baked goods (the Dutch plum cake is especially moreish) plus eggs, pancakes, fresh fruits and juices, is included in the tariff. Plus you should have at least one meal at East Indies, the hotel restaurant as, whilst being less atmospheric than others, it boasts some of the best food in town. The lobster and shrimp dishes are particularly tasty, plus vegetarians will love the innovative cashew nut cheese tart. A wonderful boutique property, ideal for a couple of nights in Cochin. Excellent value for money.
