“Whether your agenda be luxury, business or exploring, this Asian-inspired skyscraper between sea and slope, offering a spa and pool, is the perfect place for all. Large, modern rooms include city views. Dining ranges from smart to casual plus there is a lively al-fresco bar in the evenings. ”

Hotel review

Occupying 15 floors of Vancouver's tallest building, the Shangri-La commands prime real estate; a gilded eyrie offering immaculate service and well-appointed yet fairly modest rooms, given the brand (and prices).

Arrival requires insider knowledge; check-in is located on the lower lobby level in the car park drop-off, while street access comes from the upper lobby. Request high floors for views and quiet - what they lack in distinguishing décor, they make up for in deep baths, spoiling bathroom products and marble.

Do grab a robe and slippers and pad straight up to the Chi Spa’s sauna and rooftop jacuzzi, where Vancouver's architectural forest unfolds beneath you. In summer months, a handful of shaded cabanas offer respite next to the modest swimming pool – an urban sanctuary, if a small one - ideal for sipping energising blends from the Ginger Juice Bar.

Public spaces gleam but underwhelm; however, Vancouver’s vibrancy compensates. The thriving Asian food scene, heavy with Michelin nods, shouldn’t be missed – Maenam Thai is stellar and The Lunch Lady Vietnamese rises above average. While Shangri-La delivers expected luxury, Vancouver's bars, museums, restaurants and mountains provide the real magic.
