About Extremadura

Home to some of the country's most dazzling medieval towns and cities studded amidst great swathes of green hills, Extremadura offers the very best of old Spain. It’s also a region famed for its food, using superb produce to create regional dishes honed over hundreds of years. Close to the border with Portugal, Extremadura also has different cultural influences to much of the rest of Spain. Intimate and historic, the best places to stay in Extremadura provide a fascinating insight into the region’s unique identity. We've discovered a great selection of properties from restored palacios to Michelin starred restaurants with rooms.

More popular with Spanish travellers than those from further afield, Extremadura will delight visitors with a sense of adventure. The striking hubs of Cáceres, Trujillo and Zafra are filled with imposing heritage buildings, elaborate monuments and little lanes lined with shops, cafés and eateries. It’s well worth taking the time to sample and savour Extremadura’s varied bounty of delights, including Iberico pork and mutton, creamy cheeses and heart-warming stews.

Discover the stunning Monfragüe National Park, walk parts of the ancient Ruta de la Plata on foot through cities such as Plasencia, and go canyoning or canoeing in the Gorge of Hell Nature Reserve. An off the beaten track Spanish destination for culture aficionados, foodies and fans of the great outdoors, Extremadura comes highly recommended by our Gurus. Whether you’re eager to hide away in a restored farmhouse or kick back in a chic boutique hotel in town, our list of the best places to stay in Extremadura has got you covered.

The Best Places to Stay in Extremadura

For an Intimate B&B

  • Casa de Orellana is a beautiful five-bedroom hotel in a restored 15th-century manor house in Trujillo. Kick back in the courtyard garden or refreshing swimming pool after exploring the medieval city. A charming B&B with plenty of character.
  • De Aldaca Rural also has five guest rooms. Tucked away in the countryside, it's a restful choice for couples, friends or solo travelers eager to enjoy Extremadura's natural wonders. Big breakfasts set you up for the day, and cosy rustic interiors welcome you back from hikes and cycle rides. Adults only.
  • Casa Palacio Conde de la Corte is a gorgeous restored mansion in the heart of Zafra. Expect 14 individually decorated romantic rooms, many with antique furnishings, patterned wallpapers and terracotta tiled floors. The ivy-clad terraces and refreshing pool add to the magic at this superb B&B.

For Boutique Chic

  • Palacio Carvajal Giron in Plasencia combines the timeless charm of a heritage building with modern comforts in chic, minimalist rooms. A monochrome palette allows exposed stone or brick walls to take centre stage, and creates a very grown-up sense of style. Gourmet cuisine is served in the medieval hall. Contemporary and characterful.
  • Convento de la Parra is a stunning rural hotel, with 21 swish rooms set within a former convent. Secluded and romantic, this boutique bolthole also boats excellent regional cuisine and an outdoor pool. The central courtyard, filled with orange trees, is a highlight.

For Families or Groups

  • La Casa de Pasarón is a lovely family-run hotel with 12 guest rooms, some of which have space for extra beds. Little ones will love the swimming pool, and the convivial vibe of the regional restaurant will appeal to everyone. Event spaces make this a top spot for an intimate wedding or celebration.
  • Hotel Rural Peña del Alba also welcomes families and groups of friends looking to soak up the sunshine. Feast on regional fare after days of swimming in the pool or playing tennis. Rooms are characterful and classic, with additional options for children. Very laid-back.
  • La Casona de Valfrío can sleep 12-15 guests, including children, within a rustic restored farmhouse. Pick this place for the sense of privacy, the big swimming pool and its proximity to the Garganta de los Infiernos Natural Park, which has a very well-known walking trail.

For Foodies

  • Finca La Ramallosa offers a collection of one- and two-bedroom cottages in a restored hamlet close to the Portuguese border. Set on 130 hectares of land, there are stacks of activities for guests of all ages. There's a strong focus, too, on seasonal cuisine using home grown organic vegetables and free range meat from the farm. Cooking classes are sensational. An authentic rural retreat.
  • Atrio Hotel Restaurant is a superb three-Michelin-starred restaurant with rooms in Cáceres. Modern, minimalist designer guest rooms are hidden within a traditional façade, inviting foodies to immerse themselves in the restaurant's unique atmosphere for a little longer. Chef Toño Pérez pays homage to traditional cuisine with an innovative twist through his ever-changing tasting menus.
