Many visitors to this county are here for the county town alone, but Oxfordshire's appeals are far wider! Oxford’s ‘dreaming spires’ are often said to be the reason it is so popular — it’s one of the most visited cities in the UK. And whilst the architecture is undeniably magical, Oxford is also a fantastic place for shopping, browsing galleries and museums and eating out. You should also try punting. It's a great option for a short break — easily reachable by train from London or elsewhere, and packed with varied entertainments. Henley-on-Thames makes for a similarly charming getaway, as do Chipping Norton and Burford, although the rail access isn’t as good.

If you’re planning a trip to Oxfordshire for a country escape, you might consider staying near the rolling vistas of the Chiltern Hills, the top of the North Wessex Downs or somewhere along the Green Belt Way, Ridgeway National Trail, or Oxfordshire Way. Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons is Raymond Blanc's famous, and fabulous, establishment, where the rooms are as elegant and pleasing as the two Michelin-starred food. Converted from a 15th century manor house set in 27 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and orchards, this is a very special place to stay. It's a fusion of French sophistication and quintessential English charm, with 32 individually decorated rooms and suites. Of course the restaurant is one of the stars of the show, but we also love the grounds, applaud the warmth of the staff, and appreciate their welcome of families. For the ultimate treat book into a cookery or gardening course.
New to Oxfordshire's upscale hotel scene, Bull Burford is a stunning historic coaching inn turned luxury hotel in the centre of Burford. Here you'll find beautifully styled rooms in suites with moody colour schemes and natural materials at the forefront. Plus there are three totally immersive dining experiences: an Omakase tasting menu at Hori, communal dining at Horn and convivial cooking over fire at Wild.

For a Country House Retreat

The Manor is a grand old, ivy-covered, castle-like manor house in Weston on the Green, which is a stone's throw from Bicester Village. So old that it’s mentioned in the Doomsday Book, this hotel none-the-less has been converted into full contemporary working order, complete with 25 elegant rooms, furnished with all the modern comforts you can think of. There are plenty of original features worked in, including stunning wood panelling in the dining room, and a vast fireplace in the lounge. As well as the fine dining restaurant, The Manor has a relaxed bar, and its own pub. There’s also a heated outdoor pool for the summer months, and nine acres of magical gardens.

Best Pubs-with-Rooms

The Crown and Thistle is a beautifully redecorated pub-with-rooms in the centre of historic Abingdon, just outside Oxford. Downstairs, the pub is welcoming , with a smarter than average pub restaurant known for its British pub classics, while upstairs the 18 rooms and suites are individually decorated, in dark colours that make the most of both the original beams, and the stylish furniture and fabric choices.
The Highway Inn is perfectly positioned on Burford’s historic main street, an ideal place to watch the world go by. Downstairs is the cosy pub, complete with historic beams and flagstones, which spills out onto the street, and into a private courtyard behind. There’s also a dining room, and the hearty pub menu is served throughout. Upstairs are ten rooms and suites, all different shapes and sizes, and uniquely decorated. There are some family-friendly configurations too, and some of the rooms are pet-friendly.
The Lamb Inn is just off Burford’s high street, on a very pretty side road that allows it to have a large sprawling garden at the rear. The inn is known for its food, it has 2 AA Rosettes, but it still manages to be homely and welcoming. Interiors are cosy and stylish: think original artworks, original beams, flagstones and fireplaces, and gingham and florals in contemporary colours.
The Kingham Plough is a traditional Cotswolds county pub, sitting beside the green of the picturesque village of Kingham. It has just six rooms, each individually decorated with an atmosphere of cosy country charm — which perfectly matches the pub downstairs, which has a divided off area for the dining room and a spacious, high-beamed room for both drinking and dining.

For Romantics

The Bay Tree Hotel is The Lamb Inn’s neighbour, and a stiff competitor. Constructed from honey-coloured Cotswolds stone and dating from the 16th century, this property has real chocolate box appeal. Inside, the pub is very cosy, with traditional features and contemporary colours, and the restaurant is an award-winner (2 AA Rosettes). There’s a couple of cosy sitting rooms too. The 21 rooms and suites are decorated with chintz and florals, and most are a good size. The Garden View Rooms have Juliet balconies and some of the larger suites have four-poster beds.
The wisteria clad Old Parsonage Hotel is one of the best places to stay in Oxford for couples. They have a wedding license, so are well geared up for special occasions with their superb comfy beds, excellent brasserie, romantic log fires and pretty roof terrace. They can also provide you with the perfect transport for hopping between Oxford's most romantic spots with bikes and punts for the River Cherwell.
Vanbrugh House Hotel is another property that seamlessly merges the old and new. Behind the Georgian facade, in the heart of Oxford, are 22 rooms and suites, which riff on the building’s original features. Expect contemporary style fireplaces, plenty of wood panelling, and luxurious fabrics in plain neutrals. The bar and restaurant follow a similar theme.

For a City Break

Malmaison Oxford, a quirky and contemporary hotel, was once a castle and a prison and still has the heavy doors, with their telltale dents, and barred windows to prove it. It's surprisingly light and airy — the vast, three storey central atrium is spectacular and you can sit outside in the Exercise Yard or sip cocktails in the Visitor's Room.
If you like a traditional outside but prefer something a bit more contemporary inside, book a room at the Old Bank Hotel. This old bank with Georgian facade, and Elizabethan origins, boasts some spectacular exposed beams and latticed windows. But even the most traditional features are finished with a stylish, contemporary edge. There's modern art on the walls and the brasserie is always packed.
The Randolph Hotel by Graduate is an Oxford landmark transformed into a chic, boutique-style hotel It’s still elegant and grand on the outside, with 150+ rooms and suites, but now its interiors are glitzy and glamorous, which make the original wood panelling and vaulted ceilings seem hip too. There’s also an upgraded spa and wellness menu, two restaurants and two rather grand hotel bars: The Snug, which reimagines a university library, and The Morse Bar.

For Families

Minster Mill is an historic building in Cotswolds stone, situated on the banks of the Windrush River, just outside Whitney. Of the 38 rooms and suites there are a number of family-friendly choices, including interconnecting rooms and a separate cottage. There are lovely hotel gardens to explore, and an indoor pool. When it comes to catering, the Mill grows a lot to its food onsite, and has a VILP menu, for Very Important Little People. There’s also a spa, tennis courts and an impressive wine list. Some of the rooms can accommodate pets too.
If your family is looking for even more privacy you’ll find it in the three bedroom cottage beside The Old Swan, a cosy, countryside pub close to the Minster Mill. Converted from a 15th century building, with all the Tudor beams and fireplaces intact, this property has bags of charm — from its lovely gardens, to its beautiful restaurant, and carefully decorated rooms and suites, with their antique beds and smattering of country-cheerful prints.

For an Escape to the Countryside

The Trout At Tadpole Bridge is a charmingly positioned rural inn, with its own, private, back garden mooring onto a section of the Thames. As well as being convenient for canal boating and fishing, this pub has a 2 AA Rosette restaurant, making it a wonderful stop for foodies too. Upstairs the inn has six rooms, decorated in a classic country style that fits with the pub. Ideal for a relaxed country break.
The Feathered Nest is a charming property in Nether Westcote: a modern gastro pub with just the three traditionally styled rooms. The ground floor restaurant and bar are decorated with dark wood, and the atmosphere is countrified but luxurious. The food is excellent (it has been awarded 3 AA Rosettes), the gardens are large, and the views are wonderful.
The Artist Residence Oxfordshire is an intimate, laid-back country getaway, just 15 minutes outside Oxford, on the Cotswolds side. It’s a country pub and restaurant, with eight very comfortable rooms, plus a quirky Shepherd’s Hut, imaginatively decorated, with plenty of fun and luxury rolled into the design — where else do you get to sleep on 100% linen sheets these days? The atmosphere is fun and warm, the pub is popular, and the restaurant menu is inventive and delicious. The perfect country getaway.

For Foodies

The Porterhouse is a grill restaurant-with-rooms specialising in steaks (you will see meat on display, with cuts to choose from). There are just seven rooms, upstairs, painted in dark colours, with velvet accents, sultry lighting, and black and white photographs on the walls. Adults only, and ideal for a mini-break to Oxford.
The Feathers is chic little hotel in Woodstock, with an impressive gin bar, and an award-winning restaurant. Within walking distance of Blenheim Palace, and eight miles from Oxford, this is a good choice for those seeking a smaller hotel with plenty of British charm. Expect modern English cuisine created from locally sourced produce.

Travel Information

Oxford’s closest airport is Heathrow, from where you’re about an hour away by car, or an hour and a half by bus or train. If you’re coming via London, the easiest way to travel is by train from Paddington — the journey takes about an hour. But if you’re exploring more northerly parts of Oxford, or even the Cotswolds, Birmingham Airport may be worth considering. Birmingham also has a train station, which is linked to many Oxfordshire centres.

Summer is probably the busiest time to visit Oxfordshire, but this is a good time to try punting and to see inside Oxford's colleges — some are closed to the public during term time. Autumn is good for walkers, spring for the wildflowers, and winter can be very charming in Oxford, and in many of Oxfordshire’s small centres, with cosy pub fires, Christmas market lights twinkling off the cobblestoned streets, and everyone wrapped up warmly.
