For the Album

Lygon Arms

  • The Lygon Arms in Broadway is an elegant, historic coaching inn with all the offerings of a contemporary country house hotel. During its long history it’s had a very long list of famous visitors, including both Oliver Cromwell and Charles I, and once you look inside and see the maze of different architectural periods and styles represented, you’ll realise just how long the list is. There are 86 rooms and suites inside, plus a collection of snugs, nooks, hangouts, lounges, and more formal bar and restaurant spaces — there are three, the pub, a bistro, and a fine dining restaurant. If you’re looking for antiques and four-posters you’ll find them here, but there are also family suites and dog-friendly rooms: there’s a £25 nightly fee which includes a bed, bowl and treat, and there’s a muddy paws station in the courtyard.

For a Rural Retreat

Minster Mill

  • Minster Mill is an historic mill by the Windrush River, recently converted into boutique retreat with a Scandinavian flavour, an impressive spa and indoor pool, and a relaxed Modern British restaurant. There are great facilities for families, even down to changing mats for the tiniest member, but it’s still super romantic. Dogs are welcomed with beds, bowls and treats.
  • The Swan Hotel is a 17th century coaching inn with wonderful views over the River Coln. In winter its cosy lounges crackle with fires, and in summer the gardens are resplendent with colour and scent. There are 22 rooms and suites, individually decorated with antiques and fabrics that range from plain damask to chintz, florals and gingham. And the Modern British restaurant is excellent. There are plenty of dog-friendly rooms, but the best is the Garden Cottage Suite, because it has its own private outdoor space.

In a Pretty Town

The Close Hotel

  • The Close Hotel is a beautiful, 16th century manor in the pretty market town of Tetbury. Its conversion into a boutique hotel was loving and gentle, and many of the building's most charming features remain untouched, like it’s round tower and grey stone facade. Each of the 18 rooms and suites is decorated individually, and ranges from floral themes to dark, country checks. There's a good selection of dog-friendly rooms for a charge of £20 per night.
  • The Old Bell Hotel may be the oldest hotel on this list, dating back to 1220. Originally part of Malmesbury Abbey, you can see from the unique mix of interiors of this Grade I listed building, that it’s been all sorts of things, and undergone all sorts of changes. Many of the 34 rooms and suites feature exposed beams and stone windows with tiny panes of glass, but the colour schemes make it feel fresh and light, and the bathrooms are totally contemporary. The restaurant serves modern British cuisine too, and fantastic afternoon teas. Dogs are welcome in all parts of the hotel except the restaurant, and they give you a bed, bowl and treats on arrival.
  • Burford’s Bay Tree Hotel is a 16th century inn, complete with flagstone floors and open fires; it fits in perfectly with its chocolate box surroundings. The hotel has 21 rooms and suites, plus a friendly pub and an award-winning restaurant. The service is really warm, and there’s plenty of parking. There’s a good choice of dog-friendly rooms, and you can bring your canine companion into the bar and garden too.

For a Country House Hotel

Hare and Hounds

  • The Hare and Hounds Hotel is a gloriously traditional country house hotel outside Westonbirt, and just two miles from Tetbury. Built from pale Cotswolds stone, and packed with charming original features, this hotel has 42 rooms and suites — mostly arranged around a sunny courtyard — a fine dining restaurant, a pub, and acres of picturesque countryside all around. Dogs are welcome in the bar and gardens and there's a fee of £20 per night.
  • Lucknam Park is a beautiful country home, turned country house hotel, with everything you’d expect and a few extras, namely: a Michelin-starred chef who also run’s the hotel’s cookery school, an equestrian centre, and a seriously fabulous spa. The gardens that surround the house feel vast, and there’s so much to do here that you really needn’t spend any of your holiday elsewhere. Dogs are additional £25 per day.

For the Whole Family

Burleigh Court

  • Burleigh Court is a beautiful 19th century built manor house with a Grade II listing, and a picturesque location in the heart of The Cotswolds. There are just 18 rooms and suites, including six pet-friendly rooms located in the coach house, and a family suite with bunk beds. Dogs and kids will love the three acres worth of mature gardens which surround the manor too. The restaurant has 2 AA Rosettes, and a menu based on locally sourced goodies, and there’s a lovely Art Deco plunge pool.
  • The Old Stocks Inn is right on the market square of charming Stow-on-the-Wold. Its 16 individual rooms and suites are cooler than the building looks from the outside, with statement headboards and retro styling to complement the original features — our favourites have roll top baths. Families have a couple of choices, including a three bedroom self-catering cottage, and dogs are welcome in all of the Garden Rooms. The restaurant is very good too!

For Walkers and their Dogs

The Bear of Rodborough

  • The Bear of Rodborough is a stylish, rural hotel set on Rodborough Common, near Stroud, and is owned by the National Trust. It has 44 rooms and suites, decorated with country flair: think oversized headboards in chic fabrics and a Farrow & Ball colour scheme. Plus there's an elegant restaurant serving modern British classics. There are great room choices for both dogs and families, but be warned, cows roam freely on Rodborough Common.
  • The Falcon Painswick is a pub converted from an elegant Georgian townhouse in a perfect Painswick spot. Just across the road from The Falcon is the church of St. Mary’s known for its 99 yew trees, and The Cotswold Way passes right through the village, so its a perfect stop off point. There are just 11 rooms, all individually decorated, with a combination of antiques and contemporary pieces, and creating a soothing impression. The pub and restaurant are lead by the seasons and local producers.

For Romantics and their Dogs

Whatley Manor

  • Whatley Manor is a grand house set in 25 picturesque acres of Cotswolds greenery. Its rooms and suites, 25 of them, are simply, stylishly dressed, and the spa is really something, with a hydrotherapy pool, flotation pods, salt scrub showers and a thermal suite. Plus the restaurants are run by a two Michelin-starred chef. Dogs are welcome to stay in some rooms at a rate for £30 per day. But no kids allowed.

For Foodies and their Dogs

The Lamb Inn

  • Just off Burford’s postcard perfect main street, The Lamb Inn is an 18th century inn with a really fantastic restaurant — 2 AA Rosettes and a Michelin mention. There are just 17 rooms and suites, set above the bar and restaurant, and decorated with antiques and elegant fabrics. They all have beautiful bathrooms too, and our favourites have views of the rose-scented gardens. Several rooms are dog friendly, but ‘Rosie’ has its own enclosed private garden.
  • Between The Cotswolds and Oxford, The Feathers offers the best of town and country. Its 21 rooms and suites have been individually decorated, and have their own colour schemes and personality, there’s a charming courtyard and garden, the restaurant is an award-winner, and the gin bar holds the World Record for number of varieties.

For a Countryside Escape

Tewkesbury Park

  • Tewkesbury Park is a Georgian era estate converted into a country house hotel with an impressive list of facilities including its own golf course, tennis courts, squash courts, a health club, gym, a huge spa, and a choice of four places to eat and drink. And acres of land. They’re so welcoming of dogs here that they offer special packages, which include fancy dog meals and treats. It’s ideal for families too.

To Relax

The Kings Head

  • The King's Head is a great hotel in the heart of Cirencester, elegantly converted into a collection of 60 stylish rooms, suites and apartments. The decor is a simple, contemporary mix designed to make the most of the original features, and that carries through into the restaurant and bar. The spa is a big part of the hotel’s draw, and makes this a great recommendation for those looking to relax. There are several dog friendly room options and a charge of £20 per stay.

Great Pubs and Inns

The Royal Oak

  • The Royal Oak in Tetbury, is a traditional inn in a picturesque spot overlooking its own gardens and the pretty town. This is still very much a pub — in the best contemporary sense — and has just six rooms and suites, but they’re all beautifully decorated in a rustic contemporary style and colours; expect exposed beams, stone and whitewash. Dogs are welcome in the three ground floor rooms, and stay for free, and there are interconnecting rooms, which make it very easy for families.
  • Built in the 17th century, The King's Arms is an old coaching inn on the main road between Cirencester and Bristol, but in its recently refurbished state it’s become a stylish place to stay, as well as great value. There are just six rooms and two cottages, all decorated in masculine tones, with large printed artworks and white linens. They’re super doggy-friendly here, and provide your four-legged friend with a bed, treats and even a special dog beer!

For Great Value

Grenway Hotel

  • Cheltenham’s Greenway Hotel & Spa is that British classic: the grand manor house turned country house hotel and spa. Set just outside the city, this hotel still feels countrified, with chintz patterned fabrics and wall papers, and plenty of space — eight acres, in fact. The spa is worthy of inclusion in the name, and there’s a superb restaurant too — with a charming courtyard. Dogs are welcomed with a bed, bowl and chew toy.
