About South Tyrol
The South Tyrol region, spanning the gloriously mountainous Dolomites and Eastern Alps of Italy’s northern border, is one of those European regions that has changed hands so many times that it’s a wonderful mash-up of local cultures, with a regional colour all of its own. In the South Tyrol there’s a whiff of strudel in the air, a preference for medieval churches with pointed spires and pretty wooden ski chalets, and a prevalence of German as a mother tongue, which combines to give this Italian region a very Austrian feel, and a definite Mediterranean flavour to the cuisine. For our Gurus the best places to stay in the South Tyrol are those with the best views. And there are plenty to choose from, including traditional ski lodges and chalets, converted castles and villas, intimate B&Bs, ski resorts, spa resorts, and plenty of family-friendly options.
Many visitors to the South Tyrol region are here for the ski season, which starts as early as mid-December in snow-sure resorts such as Ortisei and Corvara, and runs until as late as April or even May. San Cassiano is one of the most beautiful ski resorts in the region, and while Castelrotto is much smaller as a ski resort — still good for beginners and families — its position, close to the Alpe di Siusi meadows, means it’s at least as popular in the summer season. Many of the best places to stay in the South Tyrol region are popular both summer and winter, with many of the ski resorts welcoming hikers, bikers, climbers and explorers during the warmer months.
If you’re not here for the skiing, the best places to say in the South Tyrol region include the capital, Bolzano, which is a transport gateway to the South Tyrol ski fields, but also a charmer in its own right, complete with a rich and varied foodie culture and collection of art and architecture. It’s also known for its fantastic Christmas markets. The spa town of Merano is lovely too; it offers alpine views, but is also known for its tropical plants! The architecture is notable too, and just outside town are vineyards and apple orchards, where local beer and ciders are produced.
The Best Places to Stay in the South Tyrol
For the Views
- Terra - The Magic Place is a picturesquely secluded lodge, with just ten guest rooms sharing its spectacular, two-Michelin-starred restaurant, and incredible alpine views. The decor is inspired by traditional Tyrolean design, with lots of glass and unfussy details, but the atmosphere is still very luxurious. The small spa on the top floor has a great range of facilities for its size, and the wine list also packs a punch considering how few guests the restaurant can accommodate. Welcoming and family friendly, but romantic if you want it to be.
- While all our recommendations for San Cassiano have wonderful views, the Ciasa Salares is quite special for the way it’s really tucked into the landscape, between smooth hills and surrounded by pine trees. There are 50 rooms and suites, many with private balconies, and all decorated in classic ski chalet style, with plenty of blonde wood and cosy details. The huge indoor pool and spa, and the restaurant both have incredible views too — through walls of windows — and you can walk or ski right from the door.
For Skiers
- Alpina Dolomites is a large and luxurious contemporary hotel, with an eco-friendly design which includes lots of glass for admiring spectacular Dolomite views. The location is ideal for skiers: right up against the Alpe di Siusi, and there are ski-in and out facilities, plus a top of the range spa and collection of pools — indoor and out. The decor is elegant, and the restaurant champions local produce. 301 rooms and suites.
- The Hotel Uhrerhof-Deur is small, and charming chalet-style hotel, offering the classic alpine experience in Ortisei. Expect wood cladding inside and out, which adds a cosiness that works in both summer and winter. There are just 11 rooms and suites, with a great range of room sizes, including family suites that sleep up to four. The restaurant has a very seasonal daily-changing menu, and the spa will help with any aches and pains from your daily endeavours.
For an Active Break
- The Hotel Petrus is a great pick for an active break, both in winter and summer. The location is perfect, and the 45 rooms and suites have huge windows offering views out onto your playground and the Dolomites beyond. The infinity pool stretches inside and out, and the sauna is just as substantial. In winter you can ski in and out of the hotel, and in summer you can hire a bike, and explore walking and biking trails right from the front door. The games room and stables will keep you busy closer to the hotel, plus there’s a spa, a library, and an award winning restaurant serving regional cuisine.
For Romantics
- Ottmanngut is a beautifully converted villa, set amongst lush gardens, with an incredible, mountainous backdrop, and just eleven rooms and suites. Guests should expect plenty of original features and charm, like hard wood flooring, traditional stoves, plasterwork, exposed stone, and antiques to match. There’s no restaurant, but they do offer a three course breakfast. And they have a bar and a library.
- The 33 room Hotel Greif is an elegant boutique hotel, housed in a beautiful old building in Bolzano’s historic heart. The Greif’s renovation is recent, and care has been taken to design each room to suit its original features, but with a range of simple, stylish colour palettes and decoration. The result is unfussy and full of light. We especially like the bar, which is popular with non-guests too. There’s no restaurant onsite, but guests are invited to the restaurant and spa at the hotel’s sister property, which is just around the corner.
- Castel Rundegg is a charming little castle, just outside Merano. More cosy villa than imposing castle, Rundegg now has 16 guest rooms and suites, decorated with simple and elegant antiques, oil paintings, white walls and red velvet curtains. The spa is impressive for the hotel’s size, and it has both and indoor and outdoor pools. The restaurant mixes Mediterranean flavours with South Tyrolean cuisine with great effect.
- Bolzano’s Schloss Hotel Korb is a simple, yet magical castle, with incredible views over its own vineyard estate and the lush valley beyond. Inside it’s even more atmospheric, with some of its 44 rooms and suites featuring canopied beds or four-posters, hand-painted murals and art, plenty of velvet, and views to transfix. As usual our favourite rooms are those with private balconies and the best views. Downstairs is an enormous wine cellar (35,000 bottles strong!), top-of-the-range spa, and a gourmet restaurant plus a terrace with panoramic views.
For Families
- The Hotel Oberwirt has been honing its hospitality since the 15th century, when it started out as a country inn. The incredible mountain views, and beautiful gardens and terraces, would have been similarly spectacular, but these days there’s also an Amadea spa, two pools, complimentary mountain bike hire, and a wine cellar with around 600 wines to choose from. The 30 rooms and suites come in family-friendly sizes, as well as romantic ones.
- The Hotel Weihrerhof is right on the banks of Lake Wolfsgruben, surrounded by pine forests and alpine views. The hotel looks large, covering the space of a small hamlet, but it has only 23 suites and apartments, designed to make the most of the spectacular location. Expect lots of natural wood and huge windows. There are plenty of family-sized suites, and lots to do for families (you can bring your pets too). The restaurant is known for championing local produce, and grows some of it onsite.
- A collection of 24 elegantly styled apartments, but with hotel facilities, the Lagacio Mountain Residence in San Cassiano, provides a great middle ground for families or groups who want plenty of space and autonomy, but also convenience. There’s a cosy bar onsite, and you can get 24 hour room service, or arrange for one of the hotel’s private chefs or butlers to look after you in your apartment kitchen. Plus there’s a lovely outdoor pool in the green grounds, and a sauna and spa.
For Foodies
- The Rosa Alpina is a charming hotel that has been lovingly managed by the same family for the last seventy-odd years. The location is magnificent, surrounded by pine forests, and loomed over by granite massifs; the stylish restaurant specialising in local cuisine has two Michelin stars; the spa is luxurious; the ski concierge incredibly useful; and they run great activities for kids. The decor is a stylishly pared back version of a traditional ski chalet, and next door there’s a bear museum.
- There are many things our Gurus recommend the Castel Fragsburg in Merano for: its incredible views, excellent service, its relaxed atmosphere, the beautiful decor in the 20 large rooms and suites, the pool and spa, and the gorgeous gardens and terraces, but the Michelin-starred restaurant is probably the cherry on the cake. This is a five star hotel with all the trimmings of traditional luxury, from mahogany furnishings to opulent bathrooms, and a truly incredible dining experience.
For a Rural Escape
- San Luis is a collection of spacious wooden treehouse and waterfront lodges, tucked away in a serene forest. Rustic, but elegant, these residences are decorated with wood, natural fibres and colours, aiming for a tranquil atmosphere. There is plenty of space between lodges, lots of space for families to run around, and the hotel has its own waterpark. There’s a spa and gym, and while the hotel restaurant is excellent, the lodges all have self-catering facilities.
- The Gius La Residenza is a small, contemporary hotel, with incredible vineyard views, which stretch off into the alps. There are just nine rooms and suites, all spacious and decorated in warm and cheerful colours, with clean lines and private balconies and terraces. The rooms have kitchenettes, some are large enough for families, and there’s a choice of having a private hot tub, Finnish sauna, or private plunge pool. There’s no restaurant, but they do offer breakfast, and this area is known for its fine cafes and restaurants. Plus there’s an impressive bar.
For a Spa Break
- Preidlhof is a stunning wellness hotel with glorious views in the heat of the Dolomites. The rooms and suites are well appointed and all come with balcony or terrace for enjoying the scenery. The spa facilities here are second to none and the treatments are curated by some of the best in the business. A fabulous property which will ensure you return home rejuvenated!
- Minimalist and contemporary, the Schgaguler Hotel offers spacious, well designed rooms with breathtaking views from huge windows. The decor takes inspiration from Scandinavian and Japanese style, and features plenty of blonde wood. There are just 42 rooms and suites, some perfect for families, and between them they share a huge spa, with two indoor pools, an outdoor hot tub, mud baths and a long treatment menu. The Mediterranean restaurant is a surprise, but is excellent.
- Built in the hills above Merano, overlooking the South Tyrol region and the Dolomites, the Miramonti takes stunning advantage of its high altitude position. Expect big windows in the otherwise minimalist rooms, and even bigger ones in the Tyrolean restaurant and state of the art spa. There are just 36 rooms and suites, with a great range for families or couples, and they offer a babysitting service so you can make full use of the hotel’s impressive treatment menu.
For Chalet Chic
- La Perla is the classic Italian chalet, complete with a white and wood facade, and wonderfully wood-clad interiors. If you’re a sucker for traditional charm, then there’s a high chance you’ll fall for these exposed beams, four-poster beds and hand-painted murals. There are 52 rooms and suites in a wide range of shapes and sizes, plus a fabulous Ayurvedic spa, a Michelin starred restaurant, and one of the most impressive wine cellars in the area. And you can ski right in and out.
- The Hotel Gardena Grödnerhof is a luxurious modern chalet-hotel, with a facilities list that includes a Michelin-starred restaurant, an Aqua Sol spa, a gorgeous indoor pool with a hand-painted mural, and a fantastic kids club. The backdrop is perfect. And the hotel is only 200 metres from the lifts.
For Great Value
- The Hotel Cappella is a charmingly traditional chalet with a long history of offering families a warm and cosy welcome. There’s a great range of rooms and suites, including family-sized options, and some more romantic picks complete with four-poster beds and private balconies. The decor utilises warm colours as well as wooden accents to keep things cosy, including in the restaurant, which has a lovely terrace. The kids will love the indoor pool, while adults might prefer the top of the range spa.
- Large, and great value with it, The Col Alto is a contemporary style chalet in Corvara, with all the traditional chalet-essentials including plenty of wood cladding and perfect terraces and balconies under sloping roofs, but less fussy interiors. All the features are excellent, from the charming restaurant to the indoor pool with a skylight view, and the numerous lit fires close to comfy sofas. There’s every sort of steam bath, sauna, swimming pool, hot tub, ice plunge, and aromatherapy at guests’ disposal to ease the aches and pains. Plus live music some evenings. Great for couples or families.

Travel Information
- Air travellers to the South Tyrol have quite a few choices, as the whole region is within a sort of square of international airports: Innsbruck Airport is to the north; Venice’s Marco Polo Airport is south east, Verona Villafranca Airport is south, and Milan Bergamo Airport is to the south west. There are plenty of smaller airports too, and numerous stations.
- If you’re thinking about hiring a car we recommend checking what our online partners, Rentalcars have to offer.
- The South Tyrol’s ski season runs from December until April, with lots of high altitude resorts offering great snow conditions for much of the season. The summer season, for walkers, bikers, climbers and explorers, starts as soon as the snow starts to melt, and many of the towns and centres within the region have music, art and cultural festivals that run during the summer months. Some centres have food festivals during the harvest, when both grapes for wine, and apples for beer and cider are collected. So there are many magical times of year to visit the region.
