About Winchester

Once England's capital, Winchester today is a graceful cathedral city with some stunning Elizabethan and Regency architecture surrounded by beautiful countryside. This is a great place for a simple city break for those who want to see a bit more than London. You have a choice when selecting from the best places to stay in Winchester: either opt for one of the charming boutiques or quintessentially British inns within the city or stay just outside in a grand country house.

Some of our Winchester collections:

Winchester's position, in a charming river valley, is one of the reasons this Celtic hilltop fort finally became a Saxon city and was proclaimed capital by King Alfred - and it stayed the capital until the Norman invasion of 1066.

As you may imagine there is plenty of fascinating local history to discover while you're strolling around the old city centre: the Cathedral, and Winchester Great Hall, the only surviving part of the 13th Century castle, and supposedly home King Arthur's famous round table. Winchester also has a working water mill, museum, several beautiful gardens and parks and two surviving medieval city gates.

Once you have finished exploring the historical sites, there are scenic walks to be enjoyed on the South Downs Way.

This is a popular destination, particularly on the weekends. So, if you're planning an escape, get organised and book early to reserve one of the best places to stay in Winchester.
