About Yorkshire
The United Kingdom is a relatively small island, but within this small area Yorkshire is big. It’s the UK’s largest county, at about half the size of Belgium, and includes some truly awe-inspiring scenery, encompassing the rolling Yorkshire Dales and the brooding North York Moors, as well as acres of green and pleasant countryside, and a varied and dramatic coastline. With this varied landscape comes a wealth of accommodation options and the best places to stay in Yorkshire range from smart city pads in York and Leeds, to charming rural guesthouses, fantastic pubs with rooms and top notch restaurants with rooms.
Some of our Yorkshire Collections:
- The best hotels in rural Yorkshire
- The best pubs-with-rooms in Yorkshire

Yorkshire’s towns and cities have plenty of appeal for visitors, from perennial beauty, medieval York to lively Leeds and Sheffield, and you’ll find plenty of recommendations in the big centres on our list of the best places to stay in Yorkshire too. And in the handsome market towns like Helmsley, and Victorian spa towns like Harrogate.
Yarm is a good place to stay for the North Yorkshire Moors and for access to neighbouring County Durham, and if you want to get to know the Yorkshire Dales, we think you'll find the best places to stay in Yorkshire in either Richmond or Skipton, both charming towns with plenty to see and to in the surrounding area. Scarborough is Yorkshire’s primary seaside address, with historical sites, beautiful beaches and natural spring waters to its credit, but if you're hoping to explore the North Yorkshire Coast it's Whitby that will make the best base.
The Best Places to Stay in Yorkshire
For a Country House Escape
- The Devonshire Arms Country House Hotel and Spa was once a coaching inn on the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey Estate, but is now a 40 room country house hotel - with a very nice spa. It’s difficult to know whether the views outside, or the decor inside have more charm. It’s set in lush green parklands and gardens, but its 40 rooms and suites are beautifully decorated in a range of country chic styles and colours. Each room has been individually decorated, and there are a couple with four-poster beds, and some lovely antiques. The restaurant has 3 AA Rosettes and a great reputation for special occasion elegance.
- Stow House is a large country vicarage in receipt of a recent makeover into a seven room hotel. Its chic, light-filled rooms feature exposed wooden beams and an eclectic collection of antique and vintage furnishings, and its views over Wensleydale are rejuvenating. Arrange to go horse riding for the best way to see the area, then come back for cocktails and a tranquil atmosphere.
- Crathorne Hall Hotel is a 37 room country house hotel just outside of Yarm, and convenient for the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and Durham Cathedral. It looks older and grander, with its pillars, double height ceilings, and huge hearths, but it was built in 1905, and has space for all the mod. cons.. Today that includes a 2 AA Rosette restaurant. The grounds spread for 15acres of rural peace and charm. A popular wedding venue.
- On the outskirts of York, just two miles from the city centre, Middlethorpe Hall & Spa is a 17th century mansion owned by the National Trust. It has a well equipped spa, with a large pool, sauna, steam room, a hot tub, and a range of treatments. And there's an award-winning 2AA Rosette restaurant.
For a Rural Retreat
- The Traddock is a cosy Georgian country house hotel in stunning countryside on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. All of The Traddock’s 12 rooms and suites are individually designed and decorated, some with roll-top baths, and our favourite rooms have views over the beautiful gardens and the Dales beyond. The organic restaurant has won several awards.
- Swinton Park Hotel is a proper converted castle, complete with battlements and turrets and 250 acres of parklands, including a lake and a walled gardens, in between the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors National Parks. This is English stately home living at its least pretentious. There are just 32 rooms and suites, all of them generously proportioned, and a spa and pool too, plus pony trekking, fishing and a cookery school. Oh, and they welcome kids too!
For Walkers
- The Pheasant is a 12 room hotel just outside of Helmsley, on the southern tip of the North York Moors. The building was originally a blacksmith’s workshop, and is arranged around a central courtyard - now blooming with fruit trees. One of the buildings now houses an indoor pool, and another has two pet-friendly rooms. Some of the rooms are ideal for families too. The restaurant is an award-winer, lauded for its wild and foraged produce.
Great Pubs-with-rooms
- The Angel Inn near Skipton, is a cosy, former crofter’s cottage turned pub-with-rooms, right in amongst the scenery of the Yorkshire Dales. There are just five rooms and four suites - all comfortable and modern, quite a juxtaposition with the quaint, traditional pub with its nooks and crannies. There’s a fabulous restaurant where you can find Michelin starred dining!
- The Wensleydale Heifer is an award-winning restaurant-with-rooms with 14 individually decorated and unusually themed bedrooms. There’s the James Herriot Room, 007, Chocolate Heaven, the Black Sheep, Night at the Movies and the Champagne suite, to name a few. The restaurant is excellent but if you fancy something a bit less fussy there’s also a less formal fish bar.
- The Punch Bowl Inn in the pretty village of Low Row, 30 minutes drive from Georgian Richmond, is a charming 17th century coaching inn with 11 stylish rooms and fantastic views of the Yorkshire Dales.
- A relaxed, no nonsense, pub with rooms, the White Swan Inn, is an updated 16th Century coaching inn in a prime Pickering location, overlooking the market square. There are 21 rooms, the best being the ‘Vintage Rooms’ which are charmingly traditional. And we like the stultifying traditional residents lounge of old, which has been re-imagined as the Club Room, and kitted out with pool table, newspapers, magazines and an honesty bar.
For Romantics
- The Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa started out as a coaching inn, and benefits from its super central location in Helmsley, just around the corner from the marketplace. The Feversham Arm’s impressive courtyard now has a sunny terrace and a heated pool - which is part of the spa complex of the name. Around the pool are 33 rooms and suites, decorated in country pastels. Those in the main building are more county chic, and those in the outbuildings more contemporary. The restaurant serves an unpretentious Modern British menu.
- If you’re a fan of the romance of the Bronte sisters then Ashmount Country House, a five star, 12 room hotel converted from their home, is perfect. The rooms are elegant, with four-poster beds, chandeliers and fireplaces, and some have private terraces and hot tubs. There’s also a superb restaurant championing locally sourced produce.
- The White Hart Hotel is an impressive, Grade II listed Georgian house in the smartest quarter of Harrogate, with 61 spacious, elegant rooms, decorated in a range of styles from contemporary to traditional. It has the restaurants to match too, one relaxed and one fine dining, but both are excellent.
- Wrea Head Hall is a grand, Gothic mansion, set on beautiful grounds on the edge of the North York Moors National Park - now converted into a delightful country house hotel. The hotel has 18 rooms and suites, all individually decorated - as they would have been when this was a home, and there’s a good variation of size and decor. If it’s a special occasion our Gurus recommend one of the four-poster rooms, or one with a free-standing bath. The communal areas are charming, also decorated with antiques, and the fine dining restaurant operates in the original, wood-panelled dining room.
For Families
- The Devonshire Fell Hotel is the Devonshire Arms’ more casual little sister, a Victorian-built, 16 room hotel with great family suites, vibrant, colourful decor and spectacular views of the surrounding Fells. There are great walks that start right from the hotel door, and you’re only about ten minutes drive from Bolton Abbey, and pretty Grassington. Our Gurus enjoyed the conservatory breakfast room with wonderful valley views, taking afternoon tea on the terrace, and the food. Guests also have access to the spa facilities at The Devonshire Arms.
- Swinton Park Hotel in Masham is a luxurious castle with a relaxed atmosphere and 200 beautiful acres of gardens and grounds. It has 31 large, chic rooms and suites, including some well laid out family suites, and a huge range of activities on offer, including archery, croquet, cycling, and cooking lessons in their cooking school.
- The Lister Arms is a very affordable, nine bedroom coaching inn on the Pennine Way. It’s well loved by walkers, and its pub and restaurant are well loved by locals, and it’s not just welcoming for families, it’s also welcoming of pets. Expect open fires and home cooking.
- The Plough at Scalby is a cosy inn on a picturesque stretch of the Yorkshire coast, with a collection of accommodation that includes spacious cottages as well as rooms and suites above the pub and restaurant. The rooms in the inn have a country romance to their decor, with cosy, heather-coloured rugs, four-poster beds and stand-alone baths. The pub and restaurant offer classic pub fare with a friendly atmosphere.
For Great Value
- Whitby’s The White Horse and Griffin is a 17th century coaching inn tucked in just behind the abbey. There are ten quirkily shaped rooms with a surprisingly fresh finish, plus a bistro menu and a guest list which has included Charles Dickens and Captain James Cook.
- Bike & Boot is a fun-feeling contemporary hotel overlooking Scarborough’s South Bay. Expect Scandi style blond furnishings, but more colour, and contemporary art work, but all without losing a cosy, friendly feel. They have a place for your bike, your surfboard, your muddy boots, and your dog, and they’re all about helping you find the local outdoor adventure to suit you. Great for families too.
Best B&Bs
- Tall Storeys is a charmingly chintzy, seven room B&B within walking distance of many of Scarborough’s highlights. The rooms are spread over several floors, and are decorated with antiques and original features, including ornate fireplaces and four-poster beds. It may sound a bit fussy, but the owners are very welcoming - to dogs too.
